What does Step 2 CK assess?

USMLE describes Step 2 CK as assessing clinical knowledge applied to care under supervision. Since May 7, 2026, it has 16 blocks of 30 minutes, with up to 20 questions per block, within a nine-hour session. Source: USMLE — Step 2 CK.

Can I take Step 2 CK before Step 1?

FSMB states that the examinations may be taken in either order, subject to eligibility. That does not determine which sequence suits you. Source: FSMB — USMLE Application.

Compare your familiarity with the content, work commitments and available time. Write down what favors each option and use those details in an advising conversation. A sequence that worked for someone with another background may not suit your circumstances.

Track progress as well as volume

Each week, select recurring uncertainties and explain how you will address them. Also record difficulties maintaining a block's pace. Answering more questions can conceal persistent problems when the process goes unreviewed. Use the current official format for timed practice and treat results as planning information, rather than a promise of examination performance.
