There is no single price for the whole journey

A useful worksheet separates preparation, examinations, documents, applications and logistics. The total depends on your decisions and the items applicable to your circumstances. Start with categories and sources rather than looking for a complete price in someone else's personal account.

A checkable example: ERAS 2027

AAMC lists specialty-based charges: US$11 per program for the first 30 and US$30 for each program from the 31st onward. Therefore, 40 programs in one specialty produce US$630 in application fees before any applicable taxes. Source: AAMC — Fees for the 2027 ERAS Season.

This is a calculation example, not a recommendation about application volume. It is also not the total cost of pursuing residency.

Separate the items

  • Preparation: selected resources and subscription periods.
  • Examinations and processes: fees published by their providers.
  • Documents: required issuance, translation and related services.
  • Applications: programs grouped by specialty and platform.
  • Logistics: expected travel, accommodation and personal expenses.

Add the currency, quotation date, source and payment timing. This prevents amounts researched on different dates from looking equally current.

Build three personal scenarios

As an exercise, create a basic scenario, one involving travel and another involving calendar changes. Use your own estimates and identify what has been confirmed. An unknown amount should remain a pending item rather than becoming zero to complete the calculation.

Include a column for deferrable expenses. It helps distinguish payments needed now from those dependent on later decisions.

Before making a payment

Check the recipient, service and terms on the current official page. Do not interpret spending as a guarantee of passing, receiving an interview or obtaining a position. A budget supports decisions about resources and timing; it should accompany your plan without replacing eligibility checks.

NRMP charges a separate fee

The US$630 example covers only the ERAS applications described above. NRMP Match participation has its own fee and may involve additional charges. Check the official NRMP fee schedule and record this cost separately, alongside applicable exams and documents.
