Starting a US medical career: a roadmap for Latin American physicians

Where to begin

Start with a profile map: medical school, graduation year, professional registration, study availability and your goal in the United States. For physicians educated in Brazil, Chile, Argentina or elsewhere, this prevents another person's experience from becoming an assumed mandatory itinerary.

Create four workstreams

• Documents: identify who handles each university record.
• Preparation: establish your starting point and a realistic study routine.
• Applications: collect questions about specialties and programs.
• Logistics: estimate available time, expenses and potential travel.

A simple worksheet can record the task, owner, dependency, source and next review. Before assigning a document a deadline, find out which office issues it and what that office needs from you. This reveals obstacles that a calendar focused exclusively on examinations might miss.

Distinguish the platforms

Keep identifiers and confirmations organized without sharing passwords. When speaking with a preparation team, bring questions grouped by topic and identify those awaiting an answer from your university.

How much time should you allow?

A colleague's estimate is not your personal deadline. First build a scenario compatible with work, family and resources. Revise it as your documents, study needs and objectives become clearer. Choose three actions for this week and write down what each action needs to establish.

Certification and licensure are separate checks
